Breast Screening Saves Lives

Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in the UK with 55,000 women and 350 men being diagnosed each year. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, services were halted for months during 2020, however they are now back up and running for those who are eligible.

Breast screening is hugely important as it checks the breasts for signs of cancer and can spot cancers that are too small to see or feel.

It is vitally important for people to book and attend their mammogram, because spotting the signs earlier can make for much more effective and successful treatment. The likelihood of getting breast cancer increases with age, so all women aged between 50 and 70 who are registered with a GP are invited for breast screening every 3 years. Survival from the disease has been improving over time and now around 3 out of 4 women who are diagnosed with breast cancer are alive 10 years later.

If you are eligible and have received an invitation to book an appointment, please don’t hesitate in making one. The appointment won’t last longer than half an hour in total and the mammogram itself will be done within minutes. It is very quick and easy having a breast screening and they are all performed by highly trained radiographers. The radiographer performing your mammogram will always be a woman.
