Claire Mooney

I first met Claire at Oldham Pride where she both performed and hosted, and her down to earth approach and warm welcome ensured that we stayed friends from then on. Claire had no airs, no graces, but was powerful, passionate and persuasive and was equally at home in her poetry, her perfomance and on the picket line outside Christie’s hospital supporting the nurses. Claire Mooney, a beloved champion of creativity, social justice, and community spirit has died after a battle with breast cancer and leaves behind a legacy of passion and purpose. Born and raised in Chorlton, Claire's artistic journey began early with dreams of becoming a singer-songwriter, a vision she fulfilled with gusto throughout her 30-year career as a singer, performer and recording artist.

As a singer, songwriter, and activist, Claire used her music to address important issues, from feminism and domestic violence to LGBT rights. She played a fundamental role in the protests against Clause 28 in Manchester 1988.

Claire first became involved with Body Positive as a guest performer at the launch of the first ‘Take Pride In Ageing’ exhibition at Weaver Hall Museum in Northwich.  She went on to host the Take Pride In Ageing conferences as well as hosting the first ‘Silver Pride’ at Belong in Crewe and fronted both Pride In The Park events and latterly, co-hosted Crewe Pride 2022.
