Detention
In mid-May, The Lowry’s Quays Theatre staged Detention, the final installment of Gary Clarke’s powerful dance-theatre trilogy. Following Coal and Wasteland, this performance investigates the impact of Section 28—Margaret Thatcher’s 1988 legislation banning “promotion” of homosexuality—through choreography, narration, and lived experience.
A Bold and Unflinching Production
Critics describe Detention as a "vivid interpretation and an emotionally charged reliving of how Section 28 came into being." It interlaces archival audio, narrative, and raw movement to create what The Guardian calls “dance-documentary”: a seamless blend of activism and storytelling that is as hard-hitting as it is moving.
One Theatre & Tonic review praises its “powerful blend of dance, narrative, music, and multimedia,” noting its "visceral effect" as anti-LGBTQ+ slogans and legal jargon are projected around the stage. The choreography moves from isolated solos to physical duets, illustrating grief and solidarity, particularly in an emotionally charged AIDS crisis sequence.

Community Cast: Bringing Real Stories to Life
A standout feature was the involvement of the community cast, including Cheshire residents Mike Marlow and Colin Avery. This inclusion is a hallmark of Clarke’s approach, deepening the emotional weight of the work. A review on All About Theatre UK noted:
“The inclusion of local community members with lived experience of Section 28 adds an invaluable emotional depth… grounding the piece in real lives and real pain.”
Their presence lent authenticity and poignancy—silent testimonies to political isolation, familial rejection, and LGBTQ+ resilience—deeply resonating with audiences.
Standout Performances
The Lowry ensemble, led by dancers Gavin Coward, Alexandra Bierlaire, Alex Gosmore, Mayowa Ogunnaike, and Imogen Wright, delivered performances described as "sensational… bristling with purpose and poignancy." Narrator Lewey Hellewell was praised for his compelling portrayal of figures ranging from oppressive politicians to Switchboard volunteers.
Audience Reaction and Critical Acclaim
The production didn’t shy away from confronting the audience—it demanded emotional engagement and reflection. Theatre & Tonic dubbed it “a bold and unflinching production… demanding we remember a dark chapter,” while other reviews described it as “packed with powerful stories” and “a striking mirror between past and present.”
Coming Soon to Blackpool
Following its acclaimed run at The Lowry, Detention continues its 2025 tour with a special two-night performance at the Blackpool Grand Theatre on October 8th and 9th, 2025. This date marks a significant northern stop for the production and offers another opportunity to witness the power of community storytelling through movement.
Tickets and information are available via the Gary Clarke Company and Blackpool Grand Theatre websites.
Detention is more than dance—it’s memory, resistance, and solidarity made flesh. With the voices of local participants like Mike Marlow and Colin Avery, it becomes a living legacy. Don’t miss your chance to experience it in Blackpool this October.
